<p>โดยในบทนำของหนังสือ ท่านผู้เขียนระบุไว้ตอนหนึ่งว่า "การแต่งกายและพัสตราภรณ์นั้นมิใช่มีแต่เพียงมิติด้านความสวยงามเท่านั้น หากแต่ยังมีส่วนส่งเสริมต่อกิจการด้านการต่างประเทศด้วย นับตั้งแต่รัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเป็นต้นมา ที่สยามเริ่มก้าวเข้าไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของระเบียบโลกทั้งทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจที่มีอังกฤษเป็นศูนย์กลาง พร้อมกันกับการเข้ามาของลัทธิจักรวรรดินิยมทั้งจากอังกฤษและฝรั่งเศส สยามต้องปรับตัวให้เข้ากับกระแสการเมืองโลกในขณะนั้นพร้อมกับการเปิดรับวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกรวมไปถึงวัฒนธรรมด้านการแต่งกาย โดยที่ชนชั้นนำเป็นผู้เปิดรับและปรับตัวก่อนชนกลุ่มอื่นในสังคม การปรับตัวด้านการแต่งกายนี้มีนัยด้านการต่างประเทศด้วยในแง่ของความ “ศิวิไลซ์” ของชาวสยาม อันมีส่วนส่งเสริมการดำเนินวิเทโศบายของสยามและการดำเนินนโยบายต่างประเทศของไทยภายใต้บริบทการต่างประเทศที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปในเวลาต่อมา"</p>
